Camera Operator (Studio/Outside Broadcast)

A rather important job is a Studio/Outside Broadcast Camera Operator. This particular job is a senior role and it is within television camera departments, but precise responsibilities vary greatly depending on the type of production. Studio/Outside Broadcast Camera Operators cover all types of outside-broadcast (OB) and studio-based programmes. They operate one of several cameras capturing images simultaneously (multi-camera shoots), which involves receiving camera directions (usually over a headset) from the Director, who is based in a "gallery" (production area) away from the location or set.

In order to be a Studio/OB Camera Operators they must have excellent technical skills and even expertise, and there is some scope for creative input. Some Studio/OB Camera Operators are employed in staff positions, but many are freelance, and shift work and unsocial hours are often involved.

The job of Studio/OB Camera Operators ensure, that each camera and associated equipment are all rigged and ready for the required set-up which will be needed. The Camera Operators must be able to multi-task, they must be able to think on their feet whilst listening ad watching while carrying out all of the complex technical tasks which they have been set. Supervision towards Assistants may need to be given whilst they are moving the camera, and carrying out simple camera fault-finding. Camera Operators can get the opportunity to work closely with performers, which they will use to give each performer constructive advice in order to achieve the required picture composition.

This job itself has different a different set of key skills which are required throughout the job. Each are individual but go together and must apply as each show a better understand of the job and what needs to be done and what criteria would need to be met. These skills are:

v  Must have the ability to carry out instructions with great accuracy and attention to detail

v  Must have the ability to frame and compose shots and also perform camera moves with precision and speed

v  Must have a good in-depth knowledge of the principles of camera work

v  Good IT skills

v  Must have good knowledge of the relevant electronics

v  Must have good excellent communication, interpersonal and diplomatic skills

v  Must have good colour vision, and excellent hand-to-eye co-ordination
